Golden Milk, also known as Turmeric Milk has recently become all the rage in the Holistic Health Community. It’s been something that I’ve had my eye on for awhile, and the intention to give it a go for years. I finally took the plunge after an extremely informative Ayurvedic session with a local Ayurvedic Dr here in Halifax, where she recommended that I started drinking the beverage daily. It’s amazing what becomes a priority in your life once you’re told to do it 😉
Turmeric has been touted in the health community for it’s incredible anti inflammatory properties and is also high in antioxidants. It’s my number one “prescribed” spice for any clients of mine who are dealing with excess inflammation, joint pain, bloating, chronic headaches, or any other number of symptoms which tend to pop up when our body is too acidic and highly inflamed. It’s a bold, earthy and warming spice yet has a subtle sweetness when paired with the right complimentary spices. I’ve quickly fallen in love with my nightly Golden Milk. Preparing it has become part of my evening routine, nothing can lull you off to sleep quite like a house filled with aromatic spices and a warm mug of soothing bliss. There are many different recipes and combinations to prepare this warm and healing beverage, below is my personal favourite.
2 cups dairy or unsweetened dairy alternative (My favourite is coconut or cashew milk)
1 tablespoon maple syrup or raw honey for added sweetness
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 heaping teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
freshly grated ginger
small pinch of black pepper (This actually helps with the bodies ability to absorb the turmeric)
Place all ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to a light boil, whisking to combine the ingredients.
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
Strain the milk if you have any large pieces of ginger, cinnamon or peppercorns.
Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy.
